Neon Tiki Tribe Books Designed for the Dyslexic Reader Review
It’s not every day that you find an amazing series of Children’s books. The Neon Tiki Tribe books have become a new favorite at our house, although they were written for children who show signs of dyslexia the books can be enjoyed by all. The Neon Tiki Tribe is a group of Thoughtful, Intelligent, Kind, Individuals who fight the evil Ku Kiki Tribe using their super power sunglasses and the help of their human friend Greg. These books teach moral stories, centered on current issues that children can relate to, and are interesting enough to keep the children captivated.
One of the best features of this series is that they were printed using a special font that was created to help children with dyslexia or who suffer from dyslexia symptoms. Dyslexia is a developmental reading disorder that occurs when the brain does not properly recognize and process certain symbols. This special font increases readability for readers with dyslexia, by using letters that have weighted bottoms. This offers a kind of “gravity” to each letter, helping to keep the brain from rotating them around in ways to make them look like other letters. The unique shapes of each letter also helps prevent flipping and swapping.
As a mother who sees her own children exhibit signs of dyslexia, I was excited to host a party sponsored by Neon Tiki Tribe and Mommy Parties and to have the opportunity to share this wonderful series with other mothers whose children struggle with reading and reading comprehension. As a host I received Neon Tiki Tribe books and "Super-Power" glasses to share with all of my guests, posters, activity printouts, and even recipes ideas. Each guest received coupons for an additional discount when they order more books and one lucky winner recieved a Neon Tiki Tribe T-shirt. The feedback I have heard has been fantastic. Children who typically read erratically were reading the Tiki Tribe books smooth and effortlessly.
The children love the characters, which are not only super kind and caring but also have super power abilities such as; power jumping, invisibility, super sight, and turbo charge. I knew this story had been a big hit with my youngest son, when we started decorating for our party and he recognized the characters on the poster. He said to me, “I know these guys! I saw that movie on TV the other day.” At first I was confused, so I questioned him a little further, “You mean the book we read the other night?” “No” he said, “I saw a movie on TV. It was about the boy who lost his dog. Don’t you remember, Mom? They had these glasses that could shoot laser beams?” As he pointed to the sunglasses on the poster, I showed him the book that we read a few nights before, Dog Rescue Mission. “Oh, Yeah!” he said, “That is where I saw those guys.” and he continued to tell me all about the Neon Tiki Tribe and how they battled the Ku Tiki Tribe. My point is these characters are so memorable that my son actually thought he saw them in a movie on TV. I call that success.
The party was a huge success. All of the children loved the books, they thought they were entertaining, that the font was easier to read than books that were printed in standard fonts, and particularly enjoyed the issues that the books focused on. The parents liked that the books promoted moral behavior but were more pleased that the children were interested in reading the stories. This is always an important factor for children of this age because if the story doesn’t hold a child’s interest then it makes it harder to get your child to read. After the party I received many emails from the parents stating that their child wanted to read the book they received from the party again that night. The only complaint that I heard was that there were only three books available to purchase, so we all hope that more will be written soon.
