The Boxcar Children Holiday Gift Box Set

  Charlotte the Great and I visited not long ago. On the table sat T he Boxcar Children  series  by Gertrude Chandler. She recognized the vintage illustrations and our conversation turned to our love of reading and how these books would have been ones my mother (her daughter) read as a child. Charlotte the Great couldn't remember if she knew the series or if my mother had read them either with her or independently. We tried to jog her memory by my telling her about the first book in the series. After all, it seemed a logical place to begin. First published in 1942 it fits the time frame for my mother and introduces the characters, four children who have lost their parents and decide to strike out on their own rather than live with their grandfather. As the siblings travel , they come across an abandoned boxcar and call it "home". The book offers short, simple chapters and illustrations that remind me of my mother's drawings.
